Team Darfur athletes Joey Cheek [1] and Genai Kerr [2] were featured on ABC World News [3] tonight with Charlie Gibson on Tuesday, April 8th.
Team Darfur athlete Michael Ditchfield [4] on ESPN.com [5]:
Ditchfield, who has been to Darfur to see the destruction and violence, is quick with a response: "When you're dealing with sport and the Olympics, you've got your talent, you have your arms and legs; those are your weapons. But when you're dealing with restoring peace in the world and you've got a platform because you're an athlete, your voice becomes your weapon, and that can go so far! Far beyond the final whistle or even an Olympic medal -- that resounding voice of peace from a platform that people hear."
Team Darfur athlete Emanuel Neto [6] on ESPN.com [7] :
Neto is a religious man who has spent the past chunk of his life in the United States playing basketball, but has struggled for years with a past much different than his teammates'.
"I've seen people get shot," he said. "I've seen people eating things you wouldn't even imagine, not in this life, in order to survive. You do anything in this world to survive."...
"I don't want to judge people for not speaking out," Neto said. "If an athlete does not want to support this, that's his own opinion. But it would be nice if people got a grasp of what's going on. I bet it would change their minds."
Team Darfur athlete Richard Vaughan [8] in The Daily Telegraph [9]:
"My honest opinion is that staging the Olympics in Beijing is the best possible way of forcing China to confront the issues that, in much of the international community's eyes, are unacceptable. The Games will effectively embarrass them into making changes because they won't be able to suppress the protests that are already taking place and will inevitably get stronger."
Team Darfur athlete Nikki Dryden [10] was interviewed about the controversies and protests over the Olympics on Fox Business News [11] on Wednesday, April 9th.
And watch for Joey Cheek on CNN Saturday morning at 7:30 am and Fox News Sunday morning at 9 am!
